14 April 2015:
The AGM approves six new projects - all completed by December 2015 !

New Leadership of the Cooperative

In the course of 2014 the management of the Cooperative of Yanga has fundamentally changed from a direction of an individual to a collective leadership. The new Director is Dr. Emile Okotolonda Wemakoy having at his side Reverend Sister Jeanne Otemankoy.

2. Rehabilitation of the „House of Directorate“ in Yanga

Responsible: Sister Jeanne Otemankoy
Project submitted: 12 March 2015, project approved at the AGM of 14 April 2015
Sum: 3,350 USD (+ 1% bank charges in Congo)

Sr. Jeanne Otemankoy is the new facilitator and coordinator of the Cooperative on field activi-ties. She needs a neat house. The house of the Directorate is the central building and most significant in Yanga. It needed new windows and doors and a roof protection against rusting of the corrugated iron sheets.

Unfortunately, during the renovation work a lightning stroke the house and damaged the electric installations. The repair war urgent and made the expenses much higher than expected, together with the installation of a lightning conductor. Thus the money was too short to buy the protecting colour for the roof.

Project completed with the final report of 3 December 2015.

3. Repatriation of the Jeep Toyota LandCruizer from Kinshasa to Yanga
and operating costs for one year

Responsible: Sr. Jeanne Otemankoy and Dr. Emile Okitolonda
Project submitted: 12 March 2015, project approved at the AGM of 14 April 2015
Amount: USD 5,000 (+ 1% bank charges in Congo)

In 2013, Dr. Emile brought this vehicle in poor condition from Yanga to Kinshasa for thorough repair and maintenance at his own expense. Now this jeep is back to Yanga and serving Sister Jeanne to perform her duties in Yanga.

The components of this project included: purchase of service and replacement parts, fuel pur-chase and oils, repatriation from Kinshasa to Yanga (2000 km with road tolls and ferries, cate-ring and accommodation for the driver and his helper) and their wages for one year.

Project completed with final report of 3 December 2015.

4. Project „Orphans02“: Tuition and school supplies for 35 orphans

Manager: Rebecca Walo Toko / Daniel Lotanga
Project submitted: 12 March 2015, project approved at the AGM  of 14 April 2015
Sum: 2'025 USD (+ 5% for the work of Rebecca + 1% bank charges)

This project is the continuation of the project "Orphans 01" finished in late 2013. Each of the 24 orphans in kindergarten and primary school is supported with USD 50, the 11 orphans in secondary school receive $ 75 each.

5. Project „Widows02“ for 26 widows

Sum: 2'320 USD (+ 5% for the work of Rebecca + 1% bank charges)

This project was the continuation of the project "Widows" realized in 2013. Each of the 26 women in advanced age received a loin cloth, kitchen utensils and tillage tools. In addition the houses of two widows were repaired, two medical interventions and various medications were also financed.

6. Rehabilitation of administrative buildings in Yanga

Responsible: Sr. Jeanne Otemankoy
Project submitted: 12 March 2015, project approved at the AGM 14 April 2015
Sum: 5'060 USD (+ 1% bank charges in Congo)

The rehabilitation of these two buildings is essential for the Cooperative to continue playing its role as a development model. Both houses actually in poor condition are home to offices, shops and rooms for visitors.

Since January 2015 Sister Jeanne Otemankoy is the new coordinator of activities in Yanga site. Honorary Mother General of diocesan Sisters of Saint Francis of Assisi for several mandates, she took a sabbatical and has offered to assist the cooperative in that period. She already helped Mgr Jean-Adalbert Nyeme in his lifetime on several occasions. She is a nurse by profession.

Of great importance to note is the fact that Dr. Emile Okitolonda is now assuming the role of Director of the Cooperative of Yanga.

fessor at the Universities of Kinshasa and Kasai. Since 2012 he is our most important partner: always steadfast, reliable and very competent. With these two new executives our Supporting Association sees again very promising outlooks for the Cooperative of Yanga.

Dr. Emile is a brother of Mgr Nyeme, a medical doctor by profession, Pro-

For this reason six new projects were approved during the General Meeting of 14 April 2015.

2 September 2015: Three more pojects granted

1. Micorcredits for women in Yanga region

Responsible: Sr. Jeanne Otemankoy
Project submitted: 12 March 2015, Project approved 2 September 2015
Sum: 2’600 USD (+ 1% bank charges in Congo)

The project did not work according to plan. The women involved wanted salt and soap to resale. When they had these goods a large shipload arrived, flooding the market with goods of daily necessity and the prices fell. A profitable resale was impossible for a long time.

Now the salt is used for the cattle in Yanga. The soap, which can not be stored endlessly in this moist and hot climate, is gradually used for the needs of the local population.

Conclusion: The money ist spent, the goal was not reached. We sincerely regret this!

At the AGM of May 16 2017, the Board of the Supporting Association carefully analyzed the situation. It sees the following main reasons for the failure:
- The women were not selected according to promising criterions.
- It was not possible to build on experience from previous similar projects.
- The women wanted to trade with good. The concept was based on agriculture.
- In addition the unpredictable bad luck concerning the timing.

Because of that the Board comes to the following conclusion: A reissue of such a project ist possible only if the following criteria are met:
1. The women involved need a sufficient education to manage their microcredit.
2. They have to be initiative and show the honest intention to repay the loan with interest.
3. They must actively apply and submit a kind of business plan before the money is entrusted to
     them as a loan.

2. Salaries for two teachers in Yanga not (yet) paid by the state

For months already, two teachers are working in Yanga, still not on the state payroll - despite many demarches. To promote the quality of the schools in Yanga we want to pay these salaries fort the current year.

Responsible: Sr. Jeanne Otemankoy
Project submitted: 12 March 2015, Project approved 2 September 2015
Sum: 2 x 768 USD = 1’536 USD for both teachers (+ 1% bank charges in Congo)
Project completed with the final report of 9 December 2016 and a nice letter in which the two teachers thank for our very much appreciated support.

3. Contribution to Sr. Jeanne’s mobility (01)

Lodja is the next bigger town, 200 km away from Yanga. There you can find a wider range of goods than on the nearer markets at significantly lower prices. Also located in Lodja is the nearest bank. Sr. Jeanne should go at least once every three months there. In addition she has to traval around in Yanga area. A barrel Diesel (200 l) costs 400 USD in these remote Congo regions. Three barrels should be enough for a year.
Responsible: Dr. Emile and Sr. Jeanne Otemankoy
Project submitted: 18 August 2015, Project approved 2 September 2015
Sum: 1’200 USD (+ 1% bank charges in Congo)
Project completed with the final report of 9 December 2016.

Sum: 1‘050 USD (+ 5% for distributing + 1% bank charges in Congo)

This is the fourth edition of such assistance since 2012. We can directly support 12 people who are shunned because of their pigment failures and stand at the edge of society. Nine of them are minors. For them we pay school fees and school supplies. Experience shows that people with albinism need frequent medical care (skin cancer). Our project also enables them to go to the doctor. It fills us with joy, that we can help so directly and effectively.
This project is not finished yet.

7. A better fence for Yanga‘s cows

Responsible: Sr. Jeanne Otemankoy and Dr. Emile

Sum: 600 USD (+ 1% bank charges in Congo)

Since 1980 cows are bred in Yanga, to be honest not always very successfully. At the moment the flock counts 31 heads. The fence around the pasture is a wooden fence that repeatedly creates problems because of its „permeability“. With our donation we want to allow the Coope-rative to build a sufficiently wide, escape-proof fence with wires and wooden posts, as is customary in Europe.
